Development of the movement:
The first group of Girl Scouts in Paraguay, formed in 1923, was known as the Girl Scouts Brigade. The Association continued to develop until it was abolished in 1938.
Girl Scouting was reintroduced to Paraguay in 1959 when two separate initiatives were taken to establish activities. A group of Girl Scouts was started at the Escuela Normal Rural of San Lorenzo, and, at the same time, a training course for leaders was organized and participants later opened three Girl Scout companies.
After a visit to Paraguay by the Travelling Commissioner for the Western Hemisphere, a committee was set up, and in 1960 the Asociación de Niñas Guías Paraguayas was established.
In 1962 the Association, renamed the Asociación Guías Scouts del Paraguay, received official recognition from the Government
Programme:
The Programme, created at national level, has the needs of the Paraguayan girl in mind. Activities include a range of crafts, outdoor activities, and home-skills training. They also focus on community service, international activities and training.
Training is carried out by volunteers, and sessions for leaders are held around three times per year for groups of ten to 15 people. The organization is seeking more trainers and leaders in order to be able to expand its membership.
A new educational plan for the Association was developed in 1996.
Relationship to society:
The Paraguayan Girl Scouts Association places particular emphasis on community activities and encourages its members to participate in child health, sanitation, education and anti-drug addiction programmes. At present, the main programmes are directed to the Preservation of the Environment, which includes albums about animals and plants on the verge of extinction.
Another project recently started is Limpiemos Nuestra Ciudad (Cleaning Our City), where each group looks after and cleans the public square in their neighbourhood or town.
The Project Nuestra Casita (Our Little House), the headquarters of the Permanent Camp of the Asociación Guías Scouts del Paraguay, has been completed. The house, which is fully equipped, is ready for Girl Scout camps or recreational activities. The house has bedrooms, living room, kitchen, dining room, auditorium, bathrooms, changing room, swimming pool, handball and tennis courts, barbecue and a large open space.
In conjunction with the United Nations Department of Narcotics and the local Office of Drug Control, the Association helps to combat drug addiction by organizing conferences in colleges, schools and among Girl Scouts.
Communication and Co-operation
Senior Girl Scouts, Young Adults and trainers participate in international training events, camps and gatherings, in neighbouring countries.
The Asociación Guías Scouts del Paraguay informs the public about its activities, has good relations with the media, and publishes a monthly magazine on training and an annual newsletter.
It also co-operates with various organizations including the Ministry of Public Health, the Ministry of Agriculture, the National Council of Beneficial Entities, the national direction of Narcotics, the United Nations Narcotics Department and UNICEF.
Training:
The Asociación Guías Scouts del Paraguay holds regular training courses for leaders and Patrol Leaders, including one-day training sessions.
Outdoor and Environmental Activities
The programme for each branch includes environmental preservation activities.
* Information compiled in 1997
The Asociación Guías Scouts del Paraguay is currently suspended from the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts.
