More than 6,000 bags of hope have been delivered to children in areas most affected by the earthquake in Peru. The project ‘Contigo... a la distancia’ (’With you… from the distance’) led by the Asociación Nacional de Guías Scouts del Perú has been very successful with help arriving from countries all around the world.

The first delivery took place on 1 September in three settlements in Chincha: El Carmen, Laran and Barranquito. Over 60 Guides and volunteers visited more than 650 children and handed bags to them all.

The second delivery was in Ica from 12 to 14 September. Guides and volunteers distributed more than 2,000 bags to children. They also organized games for nearly 1,000 children in Ica and Subtanjalla and Guadalupe - two neighborhoods outside the city. The third activity took place in San Antonio de Padua school where there were 800 children. Finally, the Guides and volunteers went to the heavily damaged village of Los Aquijes, where they played with 400 more children.

Each bag contained a T-shirt, colouring book, story book, box of colour pencils, pencils or pens, plush toy, another toy or game, some wrapped sweets and a message of solidarity from a friend.

Children enjoyed the time with the Guides and were pleased by the messages. The association worked together with the local authorities, schools and police to organize the trips and to transport the material and volunteers.

More deliveries

On 22 and 23 September, the third delivery arrived in Pisco. There, about 25 Guides and volunteers organized games for 2,000 children in the villages of José Olaya, Dos Palmas and Cabeza de Toro. In Independencia, 1,100 children gathered in the stadium to receive the bags and play with the Guides. Besides the 2,800 bags, blankets, sugar and rice were also delivered.

More than 220 bags have also been sent to Huancavelica for the Guides to distribute to children in the area. The association is planning to distribute 2,000 more bags on 27 and 28 October.

Help from around the world

The Asociación has received bags and donations from cities throughout Peru, as well as from Australia, Belgium, Japan, Mexico, Spain, USA. Donations also came from Guiding associations in Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico and Russia.

It is been really hard work but we are extremely pleased with the results. It is been an amazing experience for the association and we are very grateful to all the members and volunteers and also to the people in the country and around the world who donated material for the bag.
Ana María Mideros de Burga, National President

The 8.0 magnitude earthquake affected the central and southern areas of Peru on 15 August. Hundreds were killed, thousands were injured and the cities of Ica, Chincha and Pisco suffered much destruction.
